A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
