Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
