The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration changed course after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.
“The American people have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”
Next Steps
This legislation next goes to the president for his signature. Trump stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.
Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.
Support and Opposition
Democrats, along with victims and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would reveal specific data of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
