The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
